Author's Review
I bought this TV new in 12/05 after reading multiple reviews and visiting several stores to see it compared with some of the other HD rear-projection TVs on the market then. I promptly set it up with a surround-sound system, up-converting DVD, etc....
First, the good things. The picture on HD source of my satellite box is phenomenal. Crisp, clear and colors are great! This is the reason I bought this! Watching sports on an HD source such as ESPN's HD channel, or Discovery Channel HD is great. I use a satellite provider, so I had to install a separate over-the-air HD antennae for network TV signals, but the quality of the HD picture is great. On sports broadcasts, you can see individual blades of grass and almost watch the body parts fly (I love watching football on this set.) I can't really tell much difference between 720p and 1080i, however I think in sports the 720p gives perhaps a slightly smoother picture.
The DVD player on the HDMI input is good to very good, but not spectacular. That is just because the DVDs are recorded in 480p and "upconverted" to 1080i. I haven't watched any HD DVD or Blu-ray discs on this since I want to see which format finally makes it. But, if the quality of those are like the HD broadcasts, it will be great.
Now, the downsides. When watching a standard definition source, i.e. the rest of the channels on the satellite box, the picture is just so-so. If you are too close, you can see individual blocks of pixels, and it gives a "mosaic" type picture. Just not a really sharp, clear picture.
I saw some comments on fan noise, and yes there is some, but not much, and I can live with what is there. It does take a bit of time to power up and down, but again, that is necessary for the projection lamp. And, my TV just started giving me a message that the lamp needs to be replaced. (The set has a timer that records how long the lamp has been in use, and lets you know when it's time to "pull the plug"). I figure we use the set about 8-10 hours per day between all the family members at various times. So, almost 22 months of use on the lamp, and it was covered under an extended warranty I purchased when I first bought the set. I figure about 6000 hours or so.
