Author's Review
For our wedding, we got what most couples receive for presents..
at least 4 toasters! We gave 2 away and kept this Proctor Silex
SmartToast Two Slice Toaster and another brand that we have
never used. Our wedding was over 2 years ago and our Proctor
Silex is still going strong. We don't use it very often, but
at least once a week. It has been abused and mistreated, but
it has lasted much longer than ever expected. Probably because
we have a spare in the closet. Maybe we should try that one out.
What I like best about this toaster is that it is white plastic
and it has very wide slots. I can't stand the metal toasters
that can easily burn you. This toaster never gets hot enough
on the outside covering to burn anything, including the counter.
The wide slots are great, especially for large bagels that are
my favorite breakfast food. With normal toasters, my bagels
used to get stuck in the slats and it was a disaster trying
to retrieve them with a sharp item. With the Proctor Silex
SmartToast Two Slice Toaster, the slats are large enough
for bagels, toaster struedels, Texas size toast, toaster
french toast, waffles, and any other breakfast item you can
think of. No need to have a bagel wide slot toaster along
with this one. Proctor Silex also has a bagel wide slot
version of this toaster. I can't imagine the width of those
slots since ours are so large for a non-bagel toaster.
You do have to keep the settings pretty low, or you can easily
burn your item..especially plain toast. We keep it on level 3
or below or our toast is black before we know it. For bagels
and thicker items, you can raise the setting. This toaster
supposedly has SmartToast auto safety shutoff, but I have
never seen it happen. With this toaster, you need to stay
close and keep a watchful eye on your food. If there is an
auto shutoff, why has so many of my pieces of bread burned?
For a cheap toaster, the Proctor Silex SmartToast Two Slice
Toaster isn't that bad. I have had many expensive toasters
in the past, and they didn't seem to be any better than this
one. They all burn toast if not watched constantly. At least
this one hasn't set off my smoke alarm yet. It just takes
some getting used to and takes time to figure out what settings
work best with each food item. Now that my Husband and I have
sort of figured that out, we rarely burn the items unless we
forget about them and walk away. We once walked away into
the other room and saw our black burnt bagel hurl across
the kitchen as it flew out of the toaster. Not fun.
I recommend this product for people who don't use their toaster
a lot. It's ok for occasional use, but I don't think it would
do well for heavy duty daily toasting.
