Burns my toast

I bought this toaster because I wanted a good red toaster. This one looks great and Amazon.com gave it a good review. I was so thrilled, until I tested it.
I put the settings at the recommended setting of 3. On all four slots my toast was black (burnt). Tried the 2 setting, results: burnt on 1 side, very dark brown on the other. 1: dark brown on one side and brown on the other. Since we like our toast light brown, I am hoping the defrost setting will be all right (I ran out of bread), but if that doesn't work, back it goes.
